INMAGIC USE AT ODI

OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE

[Presentation notes]

Founded 1960, independent NGO development research

Originally macroeconomic, now about 50% social issues of agriculture via 4 networks and another network (this year) R&R.

Inititally card catalogue, subject files.

1985 moved over to computer database - INMAGIC, inverted index and free text, latter possible but slow. Decision to use inmagic jointly with IIMI - IIMI datastructure and modified OECD macrothesaurus.

Inititially for library catalogue only. Now variety of uses - later.

Holdings: 23,000 books/wps
400 jnl titles (indexed) - 100+ newsletters
11,000 grey/unpublished items
400 records pm added

Indexing policy

Now, Inmagic Plus 1.4, import upgrade

Hardware required, A)IPlus 286, 470k base memeory free,
B)import, 286, rec 500k

Hardware used at ODI: 2 x 486sx, 400MB, 8MB RAM, (25Mhz proc.)
1 x 386dx, 85MB (comp.=160MB), 4MB RAM, (20Mhz proc)

ODI Main database

IIMIDOCS structure
Subfileds not possible, use multiple fields where applicable (EG).
Max of 50 fields indexable.
Sort code defines default order of display/write.
Emphasis code defines behaviour of multiple field entries.
Use standardised punctuation to enable manipulation of files
Search modes - command, menu - options - menu files
Display formats - create, also act as print formats

Display/print formats limited - use in conjunction with Wordperfect
allows editing of page breaks and insertion of customised headers

Also can use special formats to insert codes that wp macros can work on. This where standardised punctuation is important.
Show PRBNUMB, PRB, and INDEX formats
Show IDL1,2,3,FIN files [courtesy pf]
Show IDL- internally produce CAW
One example, other formats for eg, printed catalogues - show, bibs for researchers, etc.

Formats also allow derived databases for circulation control - show RRMG format.
Modify option used within this database (select subset, search and modify field entries); can be used, with care, on main database, eg for shelfmark or index term chanages.

Format also for data transfer - ids, seperate database IIMI, backup!
ASCII output allows direct email delivery of search results - used by some users!

WP also used for cataloguing.
Ease of record creation as can use block/paste/templates/look up files.
As stand alones allows final import file to be checked prior to upload.
Also allows multiple cataloguers to work with one copy of database software. Security - especially with new fast import - works by uploading part, the indexing part - database vulnerable!

Other databases - show selection, ILL allows for ARTTEL formatting, etc
Personalised contacts, etc.

SEARCHMAGIC
View only version of Inmagic
Use a format to strip much data from records so that OPAC using Smagic can run on low grade pc (at ODI = 286, 70MB, 1 MB RAM, (10mhz proc.)
